The idea for the Center for Spiritual Imagination emerged in 2019 among four colleagues at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island: The Rev. Adam Bucko, the Rev. Morgan Mercer Ladd, the Very Rev. Dr. Michael Sniffen, and Cn. Kristin Vieira Coleman. Together, they envisioned a center for teaching contemplative prayer—rooted in ancient spiritual rhythms, committed to nurturing intentional community, and grounded in a call to justice in the world.
Early on, the founders recognized that before such a center could take shape, it needed to be anchored in a community of deep practice and mutual accountability. This led to the creation of a new monastic community, the heart of the Center, able to lead and teach from a place of authenticity and lived experience.
The Center’s first initiative was to design a formation program for this emerging monastic community, which came to be known as the Community of the Incarnation. Initially imagined as a local community based at the Cathedral, plans shifted dramatically with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the Center officially launched in May 2020, all public meditations, courses, and formation activities moved online—making it possible to welcome participants from across the country. The first cohort of monastics was so successful that the founders chose to continue as a dispersed, non-residential community.
That first cohort completed formation in the fall of 2024 and became the inaugural group of vowed members of the Community of the Incarnation. Today, the Center for Spiritual Imagination is fully led by vowed members who have completed formation. New cohorts enter formation each year, and our novices and vowed members range in age from 30 to 92. We are a diverse and growing community, with members living in California, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Texas, and Nova Scotia.
